One of the most important things to consider in
landscape painting is the farthest point from which you are working. This is also the shortest distance that your work of art will probably have to go. Landscape painting is usually about three-dimensional rather than flat, so the farthest point from which you can work is the extent of one's imagination. The farthest point represents something very specific and personal to the person who is making the painting. It is therefore very important to determine the exact location in which your painting will happen to be the farthest from the viewer.
A painting done at the corner of one's home represents one's own private imaginary line. Sometimes a painting of a very large size may seem incomplete if we try to view it from the farthest point in the picture. When this happens, we need to make sure that we do not see a part that does not belong to the painting. We could move our position slightly, but more importantly we should change our angle. Viewers of this type of painting will have to judge for themselves how to view the painting and they are not limited to viewing it straight on. They can also look at it from an unusual angle or view it from the side.
All artists are encouraged to perceive the farthest point in the painting, even if they are unable to physically reach it. Viewers will appreciate this aspect of the work of art and the more perspectives the artist gives to viewers, the more we can learn from it. Even if we cannot see it, the farthest point is an idea waiting to be explored. The creation of an idea can be as interesting as the farthest point in a painting.
