What exactly is abstract art? It is an art form that was created using the principles of abstract design, which is the study of design without relying on the existence of a particular subject matter. Abstract art basically uses visual language of form, texture, line and color to produce a work that can exist without the use of visual references in the real world. This type of art has been used in galleries and homes for many years, but it is relatively new to the public.
In order to give some insight into what
abstract art definition is, you need to look at paintings and sculptures that are on display in most art galleries. The majority of these images were produced long before the age of photography. These images cannot be viewed without using a digital camera or some other type of camera to take an image. After the photographer takes the picture the canvas is then mounted onto a wood frame. The photograph is then ready to hang on the wall.
A common characteristic of abstract art definition is the absence of visual references. There is not an underlying subject or even a point of reference. The paintings and sculptures on display may have no subject or even be non-existing, just a mere variation of the theme that was already applied in the original painting or sculpture. The use of color is also absent, as is the use of lines. These abstract artists do not rely on the use of paint, but instead on their ability to use their visual language to evoke feelings and ideas.
In the late 19th century Art had become extremely popular and people began to take more interest in abstract art. At the time, artists that practiced this form of art were referred to as impressionists and their works were generally considered to be amongst the best that the art world had to offer. Abstract art began to take on a life of its own and its definition began to change from artist to artist. In the early part of the 20th century, French abstract artists like Paul Durand-Ruel and Pablo Picasso defined the beginning of the movement.
From the movement towards abstract art, came abstract expressions of feelings, which expressed the artists personal experiences and as such they were able to make works of art that had powerful emotional impacts. Later artists like Cubists Camille Fontana and Alexander Smith began to express feelings through geometric abstractions. Fontana's famous painting “Starry Night” is a perfect example of this. Abstract art movements began to branch off into various different groups with each group creating forms of expression that were distinct.
The most popular and influential of these groups was the Fauvist and Pre-Fauvist movement. This movement was typified by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin and Salvador Dali. Their works are largely focused around geometric abstraction where elements such as lines, shapes and colors are used to bring about a sort of aesthetic sense. A lot of their work involved pictures of human forms but when it comes to abstract art, they are not limited to portraying only human forms. They also painted pictures of animals and objects.
Later in the 20th century, expressionism took place and this paved way for abstract art to become more popular in Western society. Expressionism included works like Jim Morrison's rock 'n' roll inspired'Morrison's Rock 'n' Roll and The Monochrome Mood: Painting in Color. The works of Picasso and Dali are also often attributed to the expressionist movement. After the death of Pablo Picasso, Cubists Vallejo and Matisse put forward their own interpretations of Picasso's work which resulted in a whole new genre of contemporary art.
After the world war, which resulted in the destruction of much of Europe's art history, new abstract art movements developed to cope with the devastation. Many of these artists were European immigrants and some were from places like China and USA. Some of these artists made common cause with the avant-garde art movements which arose during World War II in France. A parallel art movement to this was founded in Paris by the artist Seurat Jeloud.
