Wikipedia defines it as the following: “A form of art where the outcome is not necessarily clear to the observer.” But what is abstract art and why should anyone even care to know what this term refers to? Why would anyone want to go to all the trouble of learning what is abstract art history, when it just refers to a fancy word that does nothing by itself? Wikipedia, in addition to being the greatest source of info on everything, also happens to be the most important reference for an art education. This art education is very important indeed. The problem is that many people have not taken the time to really understand what this word means, and what the process of making art actually entails.
Now I can tell you that I am rather apprehensive about this, and even afraid to start delving into the subject myself. Unfortunately, many people do not take the time to learn about these terms, and thus are at a severe disadvantage when it comes to understanding the concept of abstract art.
An abstract art definition usually refers to the work which is not necessarily seen as having a conventional “image.” These works are sometimes categorized as a “style” of art, rather than a form. However, some forms of art, such as photography and some performance art, fall into this category. So does a work considered to be abstract in its purest form. When a work of art can be described as a “absurd” invention, that means that the work defies conventional understanding.
What is abstract art according to Wikipedia? Well, it can be defined as any work of art, no matter how traditional or complex, that exhibits an artistic structure that lies outside the range of ordinary experience. It could also include works that are produced by humans but appear to have no obvious connection to reality. This definition excludes works produced by machines, since most computers are designed to be non-intrusive and abstract in their design.
Wikipedia offers several further definitions, all of which fall within the broad spectrum of what is considered to be abstract art. The first definition is “abstract visual art,” which includes art that exhibits “no real human qualities.” This type of art may be mixed with other types of art, but it is not truly abstract. Many works of this nature have been carefully constructed with minimal means, providing an level of depth and clarity that makes the viewer feel as if they have actually seen the work in question. One very important point to note about this definition is that there are many who disagree with its inclusion in the encyclopaedia. There is a great deal of debate on the Internet as to whether or not this type of art should even be included, much less be categorized under the term “abstraction.” Those against the inclusion of this type of art argue that it lacks substance, or does not have any true form. Because it is difficult to define this style of art, many feel that it is not as genuine as other forms of art. This definition does not necessarily exclude this style of art, but the fact that it is extremely difficult to define is what makes it very vague.
The encyclopaedia definition of what is abstract art is a decorative art which, though based on visual means, does not attempt to portray any form. Because many abstract artists do use paint and other mediums in their works, this definition often includes these works as well. Because of this, many believe that the encyclopaedia should not include this form of art, however, many would like to see it categorized alongside other types of art such as fine art. It is important to note that what is abstract art is subjective, and is not agreed upon by any specific discipline. The boundaries between what is abstract art can often blur due to the fact that many artists choose to work within this vague category.
