This Is Why John Talia Painter Is So Famous

John Talian is a famous New York painter. Born in 1886 he was described as the “Foreman of the Street.” His street reputation earned him a seat in the New York State Assembly. He served two terms representing New York. He also went to Washington and became associate editor of the Washington Evening Post.

John Talian was a student of Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko and Milton Glaser. His life long work focused on the theme of human life. In fact, one of his most famous painting, Starry Night (1958) is a re-creation of a traditional Chinese myth. It depicts a town below the night sky with people sleeping on the streets.

John Talian was born to Italian parents in Brooklyn, New York. When he was young his father was a prosperous fabricator and his mother, a writer, took great delight in hanging decorative items in the home. John grew up surrounded by art – his father taught him how to draw and paint when he was a small child. He attended the Brush House Studio located on Manhattan's Upper East Side where he studied under the legendary artist Edvard Munch.

John Talian's work is notable for its realistic style and bold color tones. He worked with a wide range of subjects from the nudes and blues of Van Gogh to life like the city of Los Angeles in which he spent much of his life's work. The studio where he worked also housed artists who were working toward the same goals. This shared vision inspired Talian to move into his own art form and create his own art style.

John Talian was not happy with the direction his art was taking and he constantly kept himself in motion. He never followed trends or came about with his subject matter. This commitment to personal artistic development is apparent in his writing and speaking. During the course of his life, he spoke often about how the meaning of life was living with integrity and letting the “words that go around” come from the heart rather than from the mind. The quote is clearly evident in his writing as well as that of his painting.

John Talian lived his life in the moment and he was never concerned with following an accepted pattern. He was creative and always experimental. One of the earliest things he did was paint the back of his head while in a mental institution. After he was discharged he decided to paint the scars left on his head as a testament to his beliefs in himself and in his art. His dedication to his work came to light in his death bed in 1970 at the age of 34.

John Talian's life was celebrated in his famous paintings like Starry Night (1940), Landscape with Figures (1947), Still Life (1947), Landscape with Figures (1949) and Twilight (19 53). All these works are representative of John's life in its many guises. In all of these paintings he presents a person fully, which is not only true of his life but of his art as well. It is interesting to note that no matter what type of work John Talian painterly produced there was always something spiritual in it. This could be seen in his painting Twilight and in his still life series which spanned almost 20 years.

John Talian was born in Queens County, New York and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. It was there where he found his calling as a painter and as such, spent much of his life traveling the world. He made some very successful paintings while living and working in various countries around the world. Many of his paintings can still be seen at places like the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
