Water Painting Easy

Water painting has long been considered among the easiest mediums to paint with. It's also one of the most popular! If you're a beginner to painting, then you're probably wondering how to do it… or how to get started. Let me share with you 40 simple paintings ideas…

When I was a kid, I used to hang out at my grandmother's home. She had this beautiful watercolor painting on the wall that she showed me… and it was so simple, and yet so complex at the same time. The colors were rich and vibrant, and the brush strokes were smooth and brilliant. It was such a treat to sit and watch her work… every moment of every day. Fast forward 40 years, and I'm now in the same position. My goal is to try and convince you that waterpainting isn't as hard as you might be thinking.

In fact, it's much easier than you might think… provided you have the right materials. I'm going to assume here that you've decided to learn about painting, and that you want to do some basic portraits. These are the first of our 40 simple paintings ideas for beginners…

So here we go… get yourself a canvas. If you're thinking that you don't need a huge canvas like your grandma used to do, then you're wrong. canvases come in all shapes and sizes, from A4, through to the giant Batiks. Do a Google image search for 'canvas' to find the one nearest to your home. If you're looking for canvas that's big enough to hold a painting, then go for the largest size you can afford (though you don't necessarily need a huge canvas).

The medium you choose should depend on your skill. For example, if you're starting out, I would suggest that you stick to oils as they're easier to work with. It's also best to learn how to do acrylics when you're relatively confident about your painting skills. Now that you know what mediums are best for your particular painting, let's move on to our first of our 40 simple paintings ideas for beginners…

The background – now you'll need to do some research as to which colourings will suit you best. I'd recommend water colours as they're the easiest to paint with. For water paintings you can use acrylic paints and water, oil paints and water etc. Don't mix the two. It will make your canvas look like a muddy mess. Let's face it though, water is beautiful!

The colours/shapes – here you'll need to experiment a bit. Some people like to go for tight, claustrophobic shapes whilst other people like to create soft, flowing shapes. Try and be happy with the shape that you choose as painting with water gives you so many opportunities to create a wide range of effects.

Painting in layers – now that you've got your water colour, why not add a few more dry-outs? Or add a second colour if you have it. It's all up to you. Another great tip is to work in layers. By working in layers you'll be able to create the illusion of 3-dimensional objects.

It's a good idea to slow down when you're painting with water. This is because water is much slower drying than oil and you want to ensure that you don't get any brush strokes or paint smears. To speed up the drying time you can add more warm water (make sure you add water from the tap). And you can experiment with different temperatures. I usually heat mine up a little but you can do what you like.

There are lots of water painting techniques out there. But one thing I always do is play with different depths of water and brush intensity. You could use the depth of water to suggest movement, depth of fog or depth of sand. This is just one way in which you can change the overall mood of a water painting.

There are loads of water painting tutorials out there on the internet. If you do decide to teach yourself waterpain this will mean you can experiment and get creative. The best advice I can give you though is to start simple. Don't worry too much about how good you can do your water painting if you're not enjoying it.
