The origin of this new phrase was probably connected to the fact that many people began celebrating Halloween in the springtime, when the weather was relatively warm and lovely.
During these warmer times, many families would take long car trips, stopping off at town and country sides to enjoy the day. Many of these family trips included entertainment, such as Trick-or-Treating or going trick or treating in the dark of the night.
As more towns began to become larger, it became necessary to have larger houses in order to see all of the local festivities. With the advent of electricity, people were able to more readily take advantage of lighting in order to see the finer details on the faces of their friends and neighbors.
