Advertising cards are small printed items, usually card-based, that contain brief information about a person, business, event or thing. These advertising cards were first printed for distribution by manufacturers and dealers, in business to promote or advertise their company or product. Today, the popularity of these types of advertising cards have spread into the collecting market. This is because the design and contents of these cards are often the most attractive aspects of the entire card. This makes them perfect collectible items for those interested in advertising and promotion through the use of advertising cards.

The earliest group of advertising cards was issued by the manufacturer or dealer to publicize a new product or service. Examples of such cards can be found in early 20th century cigarette cards, which feature a man smoking on the cover, with a picture of the cigarette in the background. Another example is the dime cards that featured a man using a machine to make a change in his pocket. These early cards are considered very unique as they were designed to coincide with a short-term advertising campaign.

Another category of early advertising cards are blank area trade cards. These cards feature blank areas on which you can write the name of your company, a slogan or a logo. Many of these blank area trade cards feature an illustration or a photo of a product or service that your company offers. They also come in a variety of designs and layouts and some even allow you to add your own text.

A third category of advertising cards is made from a special plastic known as tri-fold. The tri-folded design of these cards allows them to be folded three times so that each side can display a different advertisement. Knabe cards are a type of early advertising card that was created in the late nineteenth century in Germany. The final category of early cards is called address side. These were probably first produced in the late 19th century in response to the widespread use of blank area on the other types of trade cards. This design was probably originated in the Netherlands where business owners wanted to show their addresses or name directly to customers. Address side advertising cards are very similar to early cutout cards but instead of using a blank area to display a business's contact information, it uses a white, transparent piece of cardboard with a black address on the left and a list of services or goods on the right. They are often made with a post card size hole punch and then printed with a white ink.

All three types of early American trade cards share a common element. These cards usually contain three horizontal designs, two of which are called a regular rectangle and a half-moon. To the untrained eye these can appear to have an irregular shape, even though the angles and measurements remain regular. The full-moon design is probably the most famous of all three, and was probably used first.
